Founded 12 avril 1797 (23 floréal an V); followed a policy started by Louis XIV in 1667 to have engravers representing on copper historical events, castles or masterpieces from the royal collections; the Chalcographie now owns more than 13.000 plates which are still used for printing and retail purposes.
