Saint for My City
Oletha DeVane
b. 1950
Baltimore-based interdisciplinary artist Oletha explores through sculpture, installation, public art, and works on paper themes of mythology, identity, and transformation. She received a B.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an M.F.A. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Over the years, she has made a lasting impact on the Baltimore arts community as an artist, educator, and arts administrator.
DeVane’s work is rich with symbolism, incorporating snakes, birds, saints, mermaids, and other figures that suggest a connection between earthly existence and spiritual realms. Her art delves into the most profound aspects of the human condition, often engaging subjects such as ritual, transformation, and cultural memory. Whether through intricate mixed-media pieces or immersive installations, she investigates materiality and the ways in which stories and symbols shape identity.
Her practice reflects a lifelong engagement with storytelling, spirituality, and the power of visual language to bridge cultural and personal histories.
