A Map of England and Wales

1749-1799

Physical Qualities Linen or cotton ground; silk and silk chenille embroidery threads, 18 x 14 1/4 in. (45.7 x 36.2 cm.)
Credit Line Bequest of Richard Lansburgh, Baltimore
Object Number 2015.39
Rectangular map sampler composed of a linen ground embroidered in colored threads, including chenille. England, Wales, and Scotland are centered within an oval cartouche. Each county of England and Wales is outlined in colored chenille as are the shorelines of France and Ireland. Each county is identified in letters embroidered in black thread. Simplified outlines are worked with red, black, green, tan, pink, and blue chenille embroidery threads. The English Channel, British Ocean, Bristol Channel, Irish Sea and St. George's Channel are also labelled. The name of the maker "M. Esling" is found in a cartouche at the bottom of the embroidered oval. Instead of an eglomise glass mat with gilded lettering as usually seen, this map is outlined in threads and ornamented with crude embroidered floral designs in two corner spandrels and two "star" motifs in opposite corners. The sampler is framed in a gessoed and gilded Sully-type frame.
