Long known simply as “A Mrs. Green of Annapolis,” this portrait likely depicts Anne Sanders Green (c. 1750–1835), shown here with fashionably styled hair and dress. In 1775, she married the Annapolis printer Frederick Green (1750–1811), co-editor of the Maryland Gazette, an important newspaper that published international news, ads, and notices about formerly enslaved freedom-seekers.
Anne Sanders’ mother-in-law, Anne Catherine Green (c. 1720–1775) had taken over the printing of the Gazette upon the death of her husband in 1767 and served as an official printer of the colony of Maryland, a position quite unusual for a woman to hold at that time.
Charles Willson Peale may have been referencing that legacy by depicting the younger Anne holding a book.
