Small rectangular sampler depicting Adam and Eve picking fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. The figural portion of the sampler is confined within a narrow border of cross-stitch. At the bottom of this inner section Eve stands to the viewer's left and Adam to the viewer's right on a small mound. Each is reaching for the apples on the tree while the snake has wrapped himself around the tree's trunk. Also within this area above the biblical illustration is a large basket of flowers with birds perched on either side. Below the basket is the name of the embroiderer 'Elizabeth Dewhirk" and the date "a [anno?] 1794". Two tiny cherubs are placed between the first and last two digits of the date, A wide border of honeysuckle flowers surrounds the inner field. The sampler is worked in ......stitches using primarily brown, dark and medium green, gold, and yellow-gold, off-white? and red threads on a plainwoven ivory colored woolen ground. Blue threads run up and down both vertical edges and across the top and bottom edges approximately.....inches from the folded edge. NOT FINISHED. sEE NOTES.
