Two faces, with enlarged foreheads and downcast eyes, combine to create a cup that proclaimed the power, seniority, and insight of a Pende notable. The dual face suggests not only the extraordinary vision of the person who owned the cup, but also the complementary dispositions required of a leader. The artist draws attention to the brooding bulge of the forehead and boldly carved brow, characteristics interpreted by Pende peoples as masculine and aggressive. At the same time, downcast, lowered eyes are associated with femininity, generosity, and humility—traits equally important for a leader’s ability to inspire unity from discord.
