Given by Morghen as a gift to Canova when he passed briefly through Florence in 1804, and not properly finished then through lack of time. This is the state before the pupils were added to the eyes. The inscription was composed by the Abate Lanzi, and fifty impressions of this state were printed before the later retouching in the eye.
The Baltimore Museum of Art by gift, 1946; T. Harrison Garrett (L. 2435b), by purchase; James L. Claghorn (L. 555c) by purchase.
