In 1935, Henri Matisse began a series of pen and ink drawings of models in his studio. This inventive take on the subject portrays the artist, model, and surrounding studio reflected in a mirror. The model's pose reflected in the mirror is not an exact duplication, as Matisse responds to the rhythmic turns and shifts of the model. The use of the mirror in the composition tightly contains the space and confounds the dizzying rhythm and constantly fluctuating reflection of the model. For Matisse, drawing was a means of study, its aim the revelation of emotion and self-expression. This drawing invites more direct involvement in his creative process.
The Baltimore Museum of Art by bequest, 1949; Etta Cone, Baltimore, purchased from the artist, august 1937
