Growing up in rural North Carolina, Haywood Bill Rivers witnessed outdoor baptisms like this one. The picture centers on a watching figure in blue
overalls and a vivid red shirt, who holds a staff like an ancient shepherd. Radiant white forms—the robes of the preacher and choir—distill the intensity
of the emotional moment. Rivers explored the shapes and color of the natural landscape, using defined brushstrokes to evoke textured foliage.
Concentric circles in the pool create the effect of rippling water, framing the baptism within a decorative pattern.
In 1938, Rivers had moved to Baltimore where he admired the works by Henri Matisse in the Baltimore Museum of Art. Shortly after completing this painting, Rivers traveled to France and met the artist he so admired.
