Bark Cloth (Siapo)

Samoan, 1919-1938

Physical Qualities Bark, pigments, 74 7/16 x 76 in. (189 x 193 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Dr. John Money, Baltimore
Object Number 1993.206
This work is thicker and has heavier layers of paint than many historic works of siapo, or Samoan bark cloth, such as the one behind you. This sturdiness is intentional, as this painting was meant to hang in a private home, rather than be stretched over a mask or worn. Its designs speak to desires and identities of Samoans in the early 20th century. While the center design represents a Christian church window, the tiled imagery bordering both sides of the composition is derived from centuries-old siapo designs, like the fa’a ‘aveau (starfish). - Kevin Tervala, "The Matter of Bark Cloth," May 7 - October 1, 2023
