Born in Germany, Karl Metzler immigrated to the United States in 1916 and was a longtime resident of Baltimore. Following his art education at the Maryland Institute, College of Art, he rented a studio on St. Paul Street and was an active member of the Charcoal Club. He later ran a gallery and an art school out of his home. Etta Cone would have been familiar with his work, and his importance to the local art community.
