Aegidius Sadeler II was celebrated for his engravings after the designs of Bartholomeus Spranger, his fellow court artist in Prague to Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. This complex allegorical composition attests to Sadeler’s admiration for Spranger and his work. At right Sadeler engraved an elaborate memorial to Spranger’s deceased wife Christina Muller, her image based on a portrait drawing made by Spranger himself. At left three women personifying the Arts (painting, drawing, and sculpture) and the trumpet-bearing figure of Fame rally around the grieving artist while Death, who aims an arrow at Spranger’s heart, is stopped by Father Time. Indeed, Sadeler’s engraving underscores that Death does not have the final word, for his likeness of Christina Muller will live on.
