An article in the Baltimore Sun in 1928 refers to Dr. Claribel Cone being one of the very few people in this country to possess a piece of "genuine Janina embroidery" and goes on to describe it as being "of dull red and blue" on fine linen. Several entries in Claribel's 1928 Diary/Account Book appear to mention such a textile, including a reference to a "Janina embroidered Table Cover square, badly used" and "one janina long narrow table scarf." The term "Janinna" or "Yaninna" referred to a type of embroidery from Epirus, the capital of which is Ioánnina (Yannina). Embroidery from Epirus, which is on mainland Greece, shares a tradition with embroidery of the Greek Islands and is generally included in studies of that genre. This is the only textile identified as "Janina" embroidery in the Cone collection, but it is far more colorful that the one described in the article. It represents the borders of a wedding sheet, or possibly borders from more than one sheet, joined into a cover.
