Rectangular-shaped unfinished Berlin wool work sampler including numerous motifs embroidered in bright wool yarns on a linen ground.
Motifs include:
Viewer's Upper Left: Chalice with cross; Upper Center: Boy and Dog; Upper Right: Lyre; Center Left: Rose spray; Center: Burning heart with Cross, Rose, and Anchor; Arrow with garland; Center Right: Book, Cross.
In the center, the name "Mary ANN M. Reber" is worked in upper and lower case. A small wreath of flowers appears on the left and a rose on the right. The lower half of the sampler is occupied by a large fancy bird with colorful plumage perched on a berry branch. A small-scale repeating floral border surrounds the sampler. The background of the sampler is filled in with crème wool cross stitches to approximately the center, with the exception of an area on the right. The ground of the lower half of the sampler remains unfinished. The dark linen net ground with blue lines every 1/2 inch shows. The motifs are worked in primarily or wholly in cross-stitch using a variety of colored wools, including: Dark rose, bright rose, light rose, pink, bright pink, dark blue-green, light blue-green, dark yellow-green, light yellow-green, light olive green, gold, light gold, mauve, dark gold-orange, light tan, dark tan, dark grey, light grey, dark purple grey, medium blue, brown, orange, dark blue, medium blue, light blue, dark red, black and white. The work is presently mounted with edges turned under on a white fabric ground and framed in a later (Eastlake?) wooden frame with cared rosettes at the corners and incised lines at the center of each member.
