Irene Rice Pereira stamped, combed, and splattered paint onto this canvas and formed the boldest black lines with paper tape. The artist’s quest to capture “the reality of light and space” led her to experiment with a range of techniques and materials in her own paintings. In 1935, Pereira helped found the Design Laboratory in New York, a school of industrial design similar in approach to the influential Bauhaus school (1919–1933) in Germany. She established correspondence with scientists and manufacturers of glass, paint, plastic, and other materials. Pereira developed her own space-time theories on human perception in science and art while recovering from a mastectomy in 1943.
