With exacting precision, Lopez-Garcia conveys an eerily still scene. The clean white carriage viewed from above fills the page, while the baby’s image and gesture remain diminutive. The background hints that this might not be a domestic scene; the
carriage bears a haunting resemblance to a coffin interior. Lopez-Garcia is one of the best-known artists in the movement of Spanish realists, sometimes called “Magic Realists.” Influenced by Surrealism, these artists made use of the their exceptional draftsmanship to create hyper-realistic drawings, believing they could reveal truths beyond the image surface.
