A fisherman’s catch and a view of sun and sea demonstrate Herman Maril’s interest in capturing time and place through simplified planes of color. The artist first visited the Cape Cod peninsula of Massachusetts in 1934. During his numerous subsequent visits, the sandy setting became a major source of inspiration for his paintings. Born in Baltimore and educated at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Maril was a nationally recognized artist whose prolific career spanned more than 50 years. He was also a longtime member of the Board of Trustees at the Baltimore Museum of Art, serving in an official capacity from 1941 to 1966 and as an honorary member from 1973 to 1987.
