This publication is based on Michel de Marolles' "Tableau du Temple des Muses" (Paris, 1655), with fifty-nine engraving by Cornelis Bloemaert (and Theodor Matham etching the backgrounds) and one (showing Salmacis) by Poilly; after drawings by Abraham van Diepenbeeck and Pierre Brebiette illustrating the art collection of Jacques Favereau (1590-1675). In the 1655 edition of "The Temple of the Muses" it is indicated that the source for this print (no. 49, engraved by Cornelis Bloemaert) is a drawing by van Diepenbeeck. Hollstein, who refers to the 1665 edition, attributes the source to Pierre Brebriette, however. See Holstein, C. BLOEMAERT 90-148. It has the same ornate frame as 1946.112.13012.
