Anthony Gabriel Quervelle was a French-born cabinetmaker who moved to Philadelphia, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1823. Quervelle translated classicizing French Empire and Restoration designs into powerful American pieces with curvaceous profiles and richly carved decoration. Celebrated for the excellence of his craftsmanship, Quervelle received a commission for a series of marble-topped center and pier tables for the East Room of the White House during the administration of President Andrew Jackson. The specimen marbles on the top of this table are Italian, while the imported cast brass bun feet were manufactured by Hamper and Yates, a firm from Birmingham, England.
