In this double portrait, Queen Charlotte is both a mother and teacher, instructing her eldest daughter in needlework. The queen holds a knotting shuttle in her right hand, while her daughter holds an embroidered fabric. Several items on display represent the theme of instruction in the arts: a bust of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and knowledge; a sheet of music; and a rolled drawing by the 16th-century Italian painter and architect Raphael.
This print reflects the idealization of motherhood that came into fashion in late 18th-century Europe. Several artworks in this gallery—paintings, sculpture, and works in silver and porcelain—celebrate maternal devotion, families, and childhood. Among them is another portrait of Queen Charlotte with her two eldest sons.
