Through the Campaign for Art, the Museum is fortunate to have acquired eleven prints by Armin Landeck, tripling the number of the artist’s prints in the collection. These four examples show how Landeck’s technique and style changed considerably over the course of his long career. "Manhattan Canyon" and "Manhattan Vista", created via a methodical system of delicate lines scratched into the plate, present dizzying, bird’s-eye views of Manhattan skyscrapers. Made some twenty years later, Chartres Cathedral and Paris Metro showcase the abstract web of strong, vibrating lines that Landeck laid over his subjects. The dynamism of this approach conveys something of the awe and inspiration the artist experienced in these places, whether through the sheer height and verticality of one of the most celebrated Gothic cathedrals or the cavernous, vaulted spaces of Parisian subway stations.
