Large scale paisley cotton print with reserves containing two different designs featuring “Chinese” inspired buildings and people: the first is similar to a Chinese pagoda with a man and woman standing together behind a stone railing. A peacock is found below and a tree with a large bird to the viewer’s right. The second features a building with a tall tower. A man and boy cross an arched bridge in front of the building. Oriental-inspired foliage and trees surround the building. The pattern was hand screen printed with 9 screens. The vertical repeat is 28-3/8" (72.1 cm.). The horizontal repeat is 17-7/8" (45.4 cm). Colors include black, white or cream, dark olive green, medium green, dark brown, dark gold, light orange, red, dark grey, and dark beige of ground. This colorway is called "Tuscany". Selvages are woven and also cut beyond woven selvage. No indication of screens or colors used found in the selvage.
"The pattern you have is the Schumacher “Chinoiserie Paisley” from the St. Germain Fair collection introduced in Spring 2002. Your colorway looks like the ‘Tuscany’ It is 100% cotton / 55” (139.7 cm) wide / Vertical repeat: 28 3/8” (72.1 cm) / Horizontal repeat: 17 7/8” (45.4 cm)
It is hand-screen printed with 9 screens. The country of origin is Italy, though I do not have a record of the mill. I am afraid the only designer information in the archives states that it was a “work for hire”.
