A friendship quilt composed of 25 separate blocks of off-white cotton ground, each approximately 12-1/2" or 13" square, with an appliqué of block and roller-printed chintz fabrics depicting bouquets of flowers, wreaths, individual blooms, etc; in reds, pinks, yellow, blue, and brown, applied and in some cases stuffed. Each block features a different printed pattern, although some motifs are repeated. In each case additional appliqué is used to vary the appearance of the block. Each block is also signed with either an inked, stamped, or embroidered name (embroidered names all in red thread, but varying in stitch), and sometimes a place and date (see inscriptions). Inscriptions include names from Baltimore, Ohio, Virginia, Indiana, New York, and Connecticut. Quilt blocks are set within a grid created by plain off-white cotton sashing 3" wide. A narrow 3" printed chintz border is present around all four sides. The quilting is very fine (about 17 stitches per inch counting both sides) and is used to outline and give detail to the petals and parts of the floral design as well as background. The background quilting in the field of each block is either in diagonal or diamond pattern. The sashing is quilted in a variation of a feathered vine with the feathering alternating from one side to the other side of the vine in small intervals. The border is quilted in diagonal lines wider apart then those in the blocks. Little if any batting is present in the non appliquéd portions of the quilt. The backing is of white cotton, pieced in three widths 23"/31"/28" wide respectively. The edges are all bound, three in a woven tape 5/8" wide folded equally over the edge between front and back. The top edge is finished in a plain white cotton binding 3/4" wide folded equally between front and back.
