A figure presides over a harbor scene, staring in deep meditation and wonder. Devin N. Morris has set the dreamer against a celestial sky and sea of pluses and minuses. A broken doorway reveals a ladder leading to an unknown destination. The figure perhaps reflects on the alternative space beyond the world they inhabit.
The artist framed drawn and painted elements in this scene with found materials that coalesce into an altarpiece. The wooden fireplace mantel is adorned with a faggot—a bundle of charred branches—referenced above in the materials for its literal meaning and as a reclamation of a harmful slur. Morris says about his inclusion of unexpected media in Come As You Are: “sweetness, protection, and faggot represent theoretical and intentional qualities imbued in the work. In the use of the word ‘faggot,’ I’m referencing a political authority embodied in the term when used to describe myself.”
With other elements like the rehabilitated welcome mat and metal garden trellis, Morris makes memory and speculation operative in his rearrangement of familiar household and everyday materials. Morris explains: “I am a forager, in a way, as far as what I pick up from outside. I am always foraging for objects to put into an archive.”
