Morris says about his inclusion of unexpected media in Come As You Are: “sweetness, protection, and faggot represent theoretical and intentional qualities imbued in the work. In the use of the word ‘faggot,’ I’m referencing a political authority embodied in the term when used to describe myself.” With other elements like the rehabilitated welcome mat and metal garden trellis, Morris makes memory and speculation operative in his rearrangement of familiar household and everyday materials. Morris explains: “I am a forager, in a way, as far as what I pick up from outside. I am always foraging for objects to put into an archive.”
