Physical Qualities Earthenware, 6 3/4 in. (17.1 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Mr. and Mrs. L. Manuel Hendler
Object Number 1947.178
Hand-modeled sculpture that has been slipped and fired in a reduced atmosphere creating a dark grey surface appearance. Burnish marks are visible. The sculpture is modeled in the form of a container (jar) that features a male and female engaged in an embrace with locked lips and exposed genitals. The jar is too rounded to stand on its own, either upright or with the man on top (as shown in photo). For the sculpture to free-stand, it must rest on the jar opening, hence placing the woman on top and precluding its function as a container.

Inscribed: Old sticker label reads "Peru. 8.40. Precolumbian. Sadie A. May Art Center. Baltimore Museum."
