Physical Qualities Gourd, fiber, hide, 11 1/2 × 4 1/2 × 4 1/2 in. (29.2 × 11.4 × 11.4 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Jonathan and Ellen Maltz, Brookeville, Maryland
Object Number 2016.112
Container for liquids in two pieces (the container and the lid, which also functions as a cup). The base material is a gourd which has then been woven over with vegetal fibers from top to bottom. The body of the container is ringed on the top and bottom by two hide straps. Hide is then woven between these the upper and lower hide rings to create a wide weaving of hide. The hair of the animal is still visible on these straps and was not stripped off in its entirety. The container is a very good condition and shows clear evidence of use (smell of milk, charcoal on the inside; the characteristics build-up from charcoal burning/cleaning on the inside; encrustations from milk runoff on the outside, etc.) It's also in excellent shape. -- KDT 04.22.16
