Convex (recalibrating a blind spot) reproduces a diagram of the American Sugar Refinery in New Orleans, Louisiana. The company is the largest U.S.-based sugar refining business, which built its wealth on the foundation of the transatlantic slave trade. On top of this archival document, Firelei Báez embedded a ciguapa, a figure in Dominican folklore who hides in the mountain and captures wayward travelers.
Báez’s ciguapa emerges from a cresting, wave-like form and braces herself on furry legs. Her head appears through the falling water as an unfurling palm and orchid. Her shimmering, diagonal form suggests resilience amidst a tumultuous ocean, which symbolizes the constant presence of history. For the artist, the ciguapa embodies “the potential to defy repressive convention and break through generations of karmic loads.”
