Farming was the economic force of the newly independent American nation in the early 19th century. This massive cream pot champions the riches of an idyllic agricultural landscape, but omits the people who tended it. Rows of wheat line the rim and central band, where pigs, ducks, dogs, and birds freely roam among resting tools and gathered sheaves. Four feathered eagle legs with sharp claws balance on balled feet to symbolize strength and stability. New York silversmith William Thomson’s inventive combinations of classical forms and pastoral scenes visualized agricultural prosperity for an urban audience.
