This is the fourth from a series of six engravings showing proverbs after Karel van Mander's designs (New Hollstein, Mander, nos. 95-100). Franco Estius created the Latin verses. The entire set of six plates of the Proverbs was much later (in or after the 1650s) acquired by Robert Pricke (his address is on the first plate, New Hollstein 95) who also added the English verses. For a complete set in the BM see 1854,0513.176-181; 1875,0213.316; 1875,0710.2845; 1817,0809.14 and 1992,0404.60-61. A preparatory drawing is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. 1980.121; New Hollstein appendix 2, 23).
