Though labeled by Georgia O’Keeffe as ginger, this painting likely depicts the ruffled feathers and inner cup of chalice vine. In 1939, the Dole Pineapple Company flew O’Keeffe to Hawai‘i to produce paintings for use in their advertising. There, she created closeup views of lush plants, many—like this vine and the pineapple introduced to Hawai‘i by colonizers and corporations. Dole used her paintings to link the company, its crop, and the land of Hawai‘i together for American consumers.
