Velvety rich strokes of pastel crayon form this image of a sleeping dog. Kanemitsu often sketched those in his social circle, including his pets. In this study, the artist’s dog, Take (Japanese for “bamboo”), receives loving attention. When Kanemitsu left Baltimore upon his separation from his first wife, Take was one of the few reminders of his former life that remained with him.
