Scientific diagrams and illustrations featuring botanical studies are important reference points for Winters’ work. In Dark Plants,2 the subjects float on the page without any obvious context or explanation, like suspended images in textbook charts. Winters presents the same shape twice, with variations of shading and scale, as if providing multiple views of the object for careful analysis. The texture of the background and richness obtained by overlaying charcoal, black pastel, and lithographic crayon imbue the drawing with an emotive quality, going beyond the more formulaic illustrations that inspired it.
