Johann Adam Klein's print pays tribute to a sketching trip he took with several artist friends in August 1818. Here he shows the party en route from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden, where they have stopped to contemplate and make drawings of the view. In the background to the right are the church tower of Berchtesgaden and the Watzmann, the third highest mountain in Germany. However, extant correspondence and related sketches reveal that the journey was compromised by several days of rain, which prompted some of Klein's fellow travelers to depart early. The romantic scene depicted here never actually occurred.
