Ellsworth Kelly’s colors and shapes were often inspired by glimpses from everyday life—the line of a table, a shadow on a stairway, a leaf. He uses ordinary language to describe the sweeping beauty of Diagonal with Curve II: “I like the movement of this painting; it’s like the dive of a fish. It belongs to a series of paintings and sculptures with descending curves in which the bottom point nearly touches the floor.”
