Banten (or Bantam), a major trading center located in Java, Indonesia, was established in 1526 and governed by a Muslim sultan. The port was home to various international interests: British colonial rule briefly replaced the sultanate in 1813, but it was replaced in turn by the Duthch who remained in control from 1816 until 1941. Banten was the primary port for Indonesia's spice trade. This dish combines an unusual motif specific to Java with a type of dish associated with European and American dining patterns more than with traditional Asian practices. These elements suggest a change in Javanese customs in response to the presence of Europeans, or an order intended for use by Europeans residing in Indonesia or for sale to European consumers.
