Here, Omar Ba painted a sweeping vision of African independence movements. At the center of the composition, a grain mill converted from a piece of well-drilling equipment serves as a symbol of transformation and human ingenuity. Four figures embody aspects of labor, administration, connections to nature, and study, representing both the history and future of a free African continent. They triumph over oppression through education, hard work, and self-determination despite the displacement and alienation at the heart of the diasporic experience. Ba explains, “I try to make this continent, which is already magnificent, even better.”
