This volume was produced to complement an exhibition of Ruscha’s prints, drawings, and books at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in 1972. That being said, the book’s unusual format and design as well as its content distinguish it from the conventional exhibition catalogue. The list of works on view is accompanied by a humorous array of photographs, including a picture of Ruscha’s “favorite pencil,” and word-play groupings of images such as “tanks, banks, ranks, and thanks.” The book cleverly includes two business cards, one for the curator and one for the artist himself (complete with a guide to the correct pronunciation of his name).
