Color features prominently on Ekpo society masks. The color black expresses the power of the two most senior masks worn by members of this association of healers, while the more junior masked characters glow with the dusty white of chalk. Edo consider white chalk to symbolize goodness, beauty, abundance and health, and its use features prominently in Ekpo rituals. Minimalist Ekpo society white masks such as this one represent a range of characters, from leopards to police officers.
