This photograph is one of several compositions that Callahan made of Eleanor and their daughter Barbara during their family outings. Rather than taking this picture with a light, portable camera, Callahan chose to employ a large, cumbersome 8x10-inch view camera, which can capture greater detail and depth. This combination of an older photographic apparatus with a newer “snapshot” aesthetic is characteristic of Callahan’s playful, open approach to photography.
