A leading Baltimore dry goods merchant, Peter Hoffman had numerous offspring, including Eliza (1779 – 1857), shown here as a well-dressed, mature maiden lady at home. The artist painted her on his travels through numerous American cities, including Baltimore, where he briefly maintained a studio. The picture retains its original frame.
