This print is a faithful rendering of an ancient statue created in honor of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who ruled Rome from 161–180 c.e. The Emperor and his steed are seen in profile, a composition that presents the most revealing and recognizable view of the bronze sculpture. Nicolas Beatrizet’s approach to his subject is nearly archaeological: he shows us the base on which the sculpture rests, including its Latin inscriptions, and even tells us— in a separate caption at the bottom of the print—that it is located in the area of the Capitoline in Rome.
