Although Matisse painted landscapes as a young artist, after 1906 he produced very few until he met the elderly Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1917 at his home in Cagnes on the Mediterranean coast. Matisse visited Renoir repeatedly, and during the next two years he painted a group of small but powerful landscapes, which included the bright palette and loose style of his Impressionist predecessors. These works, including Eucalyptus, Montalban, were painted directly from nature and gave Matisse an opportunity to explore the countryside near his home in Nice. Here, Matisse has provided a vivid description of the verdant landscape that he found so inspirational.
