Japan exercised a strong influence on English design in the second half of the 19th century, so perhaps it is logical that the same mountain that inspired Japanese art for centuries should also appear on an English fabric. This printed velveteen features Mt. Fuji framed by trees and floral elements that bend into a sinuous whiplash curve in definitive Art Nouveau style. The design is attributed to John Illingworth Kay, an important member of Silver Studio, an influential English textile design firm. It is possible, however, that it is the work of Arthur Silver himself. Silver Studios most likely sold this design to pattern retailer Richard Stanway (English, active 1870s–1905), who had it printed in Mulhouse, France.
