Colima describes the artists of ancient West Mexico (300 BC - AD 300) best known for their ceramic sculpture. Colima ceramics exhibit both abstract and representational forms marked by brilliant surface finishes and subdued earthtones. Many ceramic sculptures functioned as containers but figural sculpture was also widely produced.
The twenty-three dancing figures described here (1999.184.1-23) exemplify Colima ceramic art and creative expression. Each figure has been formed by hand and bears a unique dance costume. Some headdresses are removable. The costumes emphasize an aquatic theme: marine life such as anenome and sponges are represented as are lacustrine inhabitants such as ducks and turtles.
