Figure wearing “shark” headdress and holding fan and feathers

Colima, 300

Physical Qualities Earthenware, 7 5/16 in. (18.5 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of The Jaegal Foundation, Baltimore, George and Julianne Alderman
Object Number 1999.184.17a-b
One of 23 figures grouped as a troop of ritual dancers. This example shows a standing individual clad in a feathered tunic grasping a "fan" in the proper right hand and bundle in the left. The figure's headdress is crescent-shaped; the crescent runs from ear to ear across the forehead, showing 24 feathers. The body and fins of a shark project from the center of the crest. The attached mask is a small round face with side locks. The figure's headdress is removable. When the headdress is off, a small helmet cap (medieval looking) covers the neck and chest area and partly conceals the wearer's face.
