A rectangular pictorial sampler featuring an 8-line poem entitled "Filial Love" at the top and a landscape scene at the bottom. The poem is composed of upper and lower case letters worked in black and brown silk thread:
"Filial Love"
"Filial Devotion dear the tie/
That binds the parent to the child/
Tis from affection's rich supply/
The streams of bliss flow undefiled/
What youthful mind loves not to dwell/
On deeds which care parental prove/
What child whose bosom doth not swell/
With gratitude and Filial Love."
This poem is surrounded on three sides with a floral swag of red and white blooms in and around which are birds and butterflies. The bottom portion of the sampler features a landscape including a central building with yellow walls and light orange roof. Before the building stand a rooster and hen. A village is seen from more distant perspective on the right and several other buildings, perhaps including a church to the left. The hills to either side of the central building also feature trees with birds perched in their branches. A lake or pond is found to the left of the central building on which three boats float, each with one seated figure rowing. The scene is worked in multicolored silk threads, including Ivory (white), mauve, light and dark green, light and dark blue, light and dark brown, rust red, pink, yellow, and light orange. The sampler is worked on a very open plain-woven cotton or linen ground using satin, stem, and other unidentified stitches.
At the time it was accessioned, this sampler was in a narrow frame that was not original. This frame was removed during conservation and replaced (as of April 2002) with a gesso and gilded reproduction frame distressed and toned to give an antique appearance. The frame was fitted with conservation glass using spacers.
