John Haase (born 1763 or 1764)
John Haase was a white man who immigrated to Maryland around age 19 from Hesse,
Germany. To pay for his passage to England’s American colonies, Haase indentured
himself for three years with the Amelung glass works in New Bremen, Maryland.
At Amelung, Hasse and almost 100 other German immigrants made windows, bottles,
and objects.
In June 1786, two years into his contract, Haase abruptly departed the factory, stealing $15 from other glassmakers. John Frederick Amelung, the factory owner, posted an advertisement for a $6 reward for Haase’s return. Breaking an indentured contract was illegal, and Haase most likely changed his name to avoid identification. His fate is unknown.
