The most ubiquitous designs on classic style Baltimore album quilts are those featuring floral bouquets, cornucopias, compotes, baskets, and vases filled to the brim with flowers and fruits. In some cases these motifs stand alone, while in others they are enclosed within wreaths in a lush late-neoclassical/Victorian mode. This square displays the layered appliqué, varied fabrics, and ink-in details of the classic Baltimore album style.
Hand drawn ink marks were sometimes employed to add minute details to album quilts, particularly to those of great complexity of design. Signatures ranging from names simply rendered in beautiful calligeaphy to those surrounded by elaborate miniature vignettes could also be added in ink by hand, stamp, or template. In this example, the multiple layers of appliqué used to form the petals of the white and yellow roses are outlined and shaded in ink. The hairs on rose buds and other floral details are also drawn in to give a naturalistic quality to the floral designs. The inscription, written on a ribbon held in mid-air by two birds, is also rendered in ink.
