The ever-inventive Dieter Roth created more than 200 artists’ books between the 1950s and the time of his death in 1998; bookmaking was an integral part of his artistic, cross-media practice. "Collected Works (Gesammelte Werke)" was initially projected to be 40 volumes, of which only 26 were ultimately published between 1971 and 1991. The volumes, which were released neither chronologically nor sequentially, are organized according to Roth’s own classification system. (The 14 volumes in the Museum’s collection shown here relate to his categories of “Concrete Art, Op Art,” “Alterations,” “Life Lines,” “Mundunculum,” and “Drawings.”)
For Roth, "Collected Works" enabled him to revisit and replicate his earlier graphic projects, if not augment them. "Collected Works Volume 16: Mundunculum", for instance, offered an expanded version of his earlier publication of prose, poetry and pictograms, whereas the humorously titled "Collected Works Volume 37: 1234 Most Speedy Drawings" showcased a new body of work. With "Collected Works", Roth also was able to create larger editions of his earlier books, which had been made in very small numbers, enabling his volumes to reach a larger audience.
