These unbound volumes are reconstructions of what Roth referred to as his “slit books” (or “ferstelbilder”) that were cut by hand and published in 1958–1959. For Roth, these cut paper books enabled him to explore and experiment with several ideas, including the use of a restricted visual vocabulary (color and shape, positive and negative forms) as well as the possibilities of movement and chance. Because the loose and unnumbered pages can be oriented and ordered in any number of ways, the reader of these books takes an active role in realizing the full extent of their visual effects. New configurations of red/blue or black/white shapes are activated with each turn of the page.
